The History of Costume and Decor is taught by Lowell Detweiler.
This course locates clothing and domestic interior design within politics, geography, society, and aesthetics throughout western civilization and explores the influences of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Special emphasis is placed on tools of research needed for designing, and students use New York City as a visual and literary source of research through visits to art galleries, museums, libraries, and historical sites.
Students are required to present a number of visual and dramaturgical research projects focused on specific costume and decor elements from selected cultural, temporal, and geographic regions in relation to given dramatic texts.
